The Indian Roti Maker: Under-rated or Simply Ignored?

The Roti Maker is yet to make a ‘bang’ in the Indian mainstream kitchen. While the likes of the Air fryer and the Food Processors have still managed to have their own ‘cult-following’, the Roti maker has a few takers in comparison. Despite the fact that the Roti is one of the main aspects of Indian cuisine, the Roti maker is ‘waiting’ for its widespread acceptance. Strangely, for a country obsessed with Wheat-creation, the introduction of technology hardly ‘rings the bells’ for any. But why is this so, despite some of the top brands have launched some of the best Roti Maker in India? Well, let us find out:

Why the Delay in Acceptance?

To start with, let us simply state that Indians and Technology do not go well together. Despite India making it to the top brains in the field of Science and Technology (mostly in the West), when it comes to their own ‘applications’ are rather apprehensive about the same. The reasons are various and varied.

To start with, we cannot compromise with the change in the taste of the traditional Roti. Needless to say, the one emerging from the machine tastes different. Despite the unending promises from the manufacturers, the Roti from the Roti makers does not taste like the one your mother prepares in the kitchen. Hence, the Roti maker takes a back seat when it comes to popularity among the common clan.

The other major aspect that most times hinders the growth of the many aspects of India as a whole is that we are borderline sadistic in nature. While most might argue, scoff or outright reject the theory, sadly this is the truth. We as Indians, do not believe in ‘ease and comfort’, as there has to be a certain degree of struggle ‘required’ for the results to show. Hence, the very thought of a machine making easy rotis instead of a woman slaving away in the kitchen is a ‘taboo’. We are so used to the idea of our women-flok working hard and sweating away, that investing in a machine to do the same is a huge ‘no-no’.

CONCLUSION

Personally speaking, even if it could taste great, one cannot imagine a Roti maker in the Indian kitchen. Simply because it shouldn't. However, the machine does have its own set of takers. People who like to invest in sensibilities and bring a change to the stagnant Indian (society) kitchen.
