Procrastination: Myth and Facts

The phenomenon of putting away or prolonging a certain task for later is known as procrastination. While this might be the regular dictionary meaning of the term, there is still a lot more to the phenomenon. Most people might have perceived procrastination to be a ‘negative’ aspect. While this is not entirely false, nevertheless, there is still a lot more to the aspect than what meets the eye. S, let us take a look at some of the common myths and facts related to procrastination.

Delay is a Bad Idea

Not, exactly; a certain amount of delay is quite good. While procrastination might be good, however, not all delay is procrastination. Some experts believe that procrastination or the delay arising due to it is a good idea. This is because delay is the body’s idea of getting ready for the task. It could be schedule-related, situational-related or simply because you need to gear up. Hence, there is an ideal amount of ‘healthy procrastination’ which is good for you to start your ordeal.

Procrastination: Working Under Pressure

A lot of people believe that procrastination occurs in people who can ‘pull off’ working at the last minute. However, this might not be true for all or under all situations. As mentioned earlier, Procrastination in a healthy ‘dose’ is good for you, but it is important to know that not all ‘last-minute’ plunge is a good idea. Working under pressure might not be successful for all.

It’s a Time Management Issue

Not true. Procrastination has nothing to do with bad time management. It is an act of putting off the task at hand. Hence, stating that procrastination is all about faulty time management is a myth. You can be well-scheduled, but still, procrastinate and end up in a soup. Hence, other than a well-planned calender, it is also necessary to ensure that you have the right amount of willpower to execute your plans and not procrastinate.

The Procrastination ‘Gene’

This one is so silly it is laughable. No, procrastination is not genetic and it is not an inherent trait. We procrastinate because of the environment around us, our lack of discipline and other environmental factors. Therefore one has to ‘practice’ pushing back the temptation to procrastinate rather than blaming our parents for the same.
